Acibadem Sistina Hospital is the only hospital in the country where the minimally invasive Rezūm™ Water Vapor Therapy procedure is performed for benign prostatic hyperplasia treatment. This method uses heat, produced by water vapor, in order the excess of cells that cause prostate enlargement to be destroyed. This intervention is performed by an experienced team of urologists: Dr. Aleksandar Mickovski, Prof. Dr. Sotir Stavridis and Dr. Vladimir Lozanovski.

During this minimally invasive procedure, a device is used to deliver water vapor directly into the enlarged prostate tissue through a small needle. The vapor quickly condenses into water, thus releasing heat energy that destroys the enlarged tissue cells. By destroying the cells, the prostate and pressure on the urethra are reduced, thus leading to better urine flow and decreasing the BPH symptoms,” explains Dr. Mickovski.

The number of water vapor treatments varies depending on the prostate size and the response to this treatment in each patient is individual.

“The advantage of this minimally invasive procedure is that in these patients, sexual function is fully preserved, including the ability to eject sperm (ejaculation), which has been impossible with other procedures so far. The entire procedure lasts very short and the patient leaves the hospital the same day after 2 to 3 hours,” says Dr. Mickovski.

This minimally invasive procedure allows patients to quickly return to daily activities, and symptoms improvement begins to be felt after two weeks, while complete recovery can be achieved within three months.

Dr. Aleksandar Mickovski, says that 50% of men under the age of 60 suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia, and by the age of 85, about 90% of them. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a pathological process in which there is excessive proliferation of prostate cells, which results in an volume gland increase, obstruction of the urethra and difficulty in bladder emptying and sometimes even blocking it completely. The most common symptoms of prostatic hyperplasia are: frequent urination, difficulty starting urination, sudden, strong urge to urinate, weak urine stream, straining to start and maintain urination, frequent nighttime urination.
