An extremely rare and complex operation was performed at Acibadem Sistina Hospital on a 10-month-old baby with Hirschsprung's disease - a congenital disease of the colon in which nerve cells are missing, and which prevents normal bowel movement, leading to serious health complications at an early age.
The operation was performed by the paediatric surgeon, Ass. Prof. Risto Simeonov, MD, PhD, who stated that this is an extremely rare case.

"By applying the modern surgical method transanal pull-through, the non-functional part of the intestine, measuring 57 centimetres in length, was successfully removed, which is the longest segment ever recorded and operated on with this method, a rare case even in the world," said Ass. Prof. Risto Simeonov, MD, PhD, paediatric surgeon.
This procedure represents a significant medical success and another confirmation of the high level of expertise in Macedonian paediatric surgery, as well as hope for better and higher quality of life for the youngest patients having this rare disease.

The postoperative course went well and after the baby's 7-day stay at the hospital, he went home today in stable condition.
