PRECISE PLACEMENT OF VENTRICULOPERITONEAL SHUNTS GUIDED BY NEURONAVIGATION: A NEW STANDARD FOR SAFER NEUROSURGERY

05/12/2025

Precise placement of a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) system for cerebrospinal fluid drainage was performed at Acibadem Sistina Hospital using a neuronavigation system in a patient with unicompartmentalized hydrocephalus.

The patient had previously undergone multiple neurosurgical procedures that significantly altered normal brain anatomy, which reduced the accuracy of shunt placement using standard methods based on anatomical landmarks and the team's experience.

"Preoperatively, the patient underwent high-resolution computed tomography (CT), which allowed for detailed reconstruction of the ventricular system. Based on these data, a trigonometrically correct analysis of the optimal trajectory for placement of the ventricular catheter was performed, including the patient's individual variations," said Milenko Kostov, MD, neurosurgeon.
