The urological team of Acıbadem Sistina Hospital performed an extremely complex reconstructive urological intervention being performed only at four reference European centers so far. An artificial urinary sphincter and a three-component penile prosthesis were simultaneously implanted in a patient - an intervention known under the medical term AMS 1500, after the American Medical Systems - Boston Scientific, the leading manufacturer of such implants.
Performing this intervention, with a single surgical incision, two complex conditions have been permanently resolved: extreme erectile dysfunction and complete urinary incontinence, thus providing the patient with a permanent solution to erectile dysfunction and diaper addiction. This intervention has been considered the pinnacle of reconstructive urology and it has been performed only at centers with many years of experience and high expertise.
The surgery was performed by the urology team of "Acibadem Sistina" led by Aleksandar Mickovski, MD, in the presence of Prof. Vladimir Kojovikj, MD, a long-time external expert associate of the hospital and an eminent world urologist who has had an excellent relationship and shared experience with our team over the years.
"We are proud that for the first time in the region, our hospital has been a pioneer in performing this extremely complex intervention. The successful surgery has been the result of continuous education, teamwork and leading surgical practice. It is a special honor that the patient from Switzerland chose our hospital, based on recommendations by our other patients, to obtain the most modern and permanent solution to his problem. It is a confirmation that Macedonian urology can keep pace with leading European centers. Many thanks, first of all, to the patient for his unreserved trust, to the international surgical team and our operating room staff, as well as to the Boston Scientific representative office for Macedonia for their complete support", said Mickovski, MD.
The complex intervention lasted four and a half hours, and afterwards the patient was transferred to the surgical ward; following a short hospital stay and complete recovery, the patient will return to his daily activities.
