Sometimes the most beautiful friendships begin completely unexpectedly. In a hospital room, during one of the most emotional moments in life, amid uncertainty, excitement, and the first meeting with your child. Such is the story of Ivana and Vaska, which began on June 16, 2023. Three years ago, they unexpectedly found themselves as roommates in the Obstetrics Department at Acibadem Sistina Hospital and became mothers on the same day. Today, for the second time, life brought them together in an almost incredible way: they gave birth again on the same day and stayed together in the same room once more.

When Vaska arrived in the room, Ivana had already given birth and had her newborn son, Mihail, by her side. “When I was admitted and entered the room, I immediately felt a beautiful energy. Ivana had already given birth, and that was when I saw Mihail for the first time. I was amazed; I didn’t know that a newborn baby could be so beautiful. In a way, it encouraged me, and I couldn’t wait to give birth too,” Vaska recalls.

Just a few hours later, on the same day, her daughter Dina was born. Both mothers had given birth by cesarean section, and the days of recovery became the beginning of a sincere friendship. Since Ivana had given birth a few hours earlier, she told Vaska what to expect and reassured her at every step. They helped each other get out of bed, encouraged each other to go for walks, supported each other in caring for their newborns, and especially during their first attempts at breastfeeding.

“In addition to the immense help from the nurses, we also helped each other. When one of us had more strength, she helped the other with the baby. We laughed a lot, and I was in pain from the cesarean section, so I sometimes had to tell Ivana to stop making me laugh. We spent our recovery with a lot of laughter and optimism,” Vaska says.

During the days they spent in the hospital, they had time to truly get to know each other. They shared their life stories, their journeys to motherhood, plans for the future, and all those little fears and joys that come with the first days with a newborn. Their friendship did not stay behind the hospital room door. After they went home, they continued to communicate regularly, and since they both live in Skopje, meeting up and staying in touch became part of their everyday lives.

“Every month, we took pictures of the babies together - first month, second month, third month... with all the numbers. We constantly wrote to each other about how our day went, whether the baby was breastfeeding, how they slept, and what new things they have done,” says Ivana.

The friendship extended to their families as well. Their partners also developed a close relationship, especially through joint visits and spending time together with the children.

At that time, they still did not know that life was preparing a continuation of their story, one that could hardly have been planned. Then, during a completely ordinary meeting at a playroom, a new surprise followed, as Ivana decided to share her big news.

On the other side, Vaska immediately replied: “Well, I’m pregnant too!”

Laughter, disbelief, and, of course, a comparison of their expected delivery dates followed. Ivana was due on August 13, and Vaska on August 18.

Although their pregnancies were managed by different gynecologists - Ivana managed her pregnancy with Dr. Nikola Panchevski, and Vaska with Prof. Dr. Gligor Dimitrov - there was a possibility that the events of three years ago could repeat themselves.

In the last weeks of pregnancy, during regular check-ups with both patients, it was determined that the births would have to be completed by cesarean section.

“When I laughed and told the doctor our story about Ivana and me, that three years ago we had given birth on the same day, he told me that there was a possibility that the same thing could happen again. I was overjoyed. We really wanted to be together again, and our wish truly came true,” says Vaska.

On August 7, 2026, three years after their first shared birth experience, Ivana and Vaska became mothers again on the same day. This time, Joana and Ognen came into the world.

“In all the emotional turmoil surrounding childbirth, when you think about so many things and have different worries, knowing that I would be in the room with her again gave me immense security. I was much calmer because I knew that there would be someone close to me by my side, someone who would understand me and support me through this life experience,” says Vaska.

The symbolism became even greater when a message from Ivana arrived: “I’m waiting for you in room 3028. We’re ready.”

And this time, one sent the other off to give birth, only to set off on the same path herself immediately afterwards. Even the birth numbers of their babies are one after the other.

Today, from two unknown women who, three years ago, were accidentally placed in the same hospital room, they have become friends who are sharing some of the most important moments of their lives. They have many things in common: both are lawyers, their first children, Dina and Mihail, are growing up together, and now Joana and Ognen will also share a special memory.

On several occasions, the staff joked that their story might still have a sequel. Ivana and Vaska laughingly say that they “have two chances” and that perhaps their children will one day bring their families even closer together.

Behind their beautiful story, they say, is the feeling of security they received from the entire team at Acibadem Sistina Hospital.

“We are grateful to the doctors, nurses, paramedics, and all the staff. Doctors are key in the birth process, but afterwards you realize how much each person who is by your side means - the nurses, paramedics, and everyone who helps you during your recovery and in those first moments with the baby. The fact that we both returned here for the second time is, in fact, the greatest proof of the trust we have,” say Vaska and Ivana.

The story of Ivana and Vaska reminds us that a maternity ward is not just a place where a new life is born. Sometimes, it is also where a friendship is born.
