Deep vein thrombosis of the legs, pulmonary embolism, dysfunctional kidney due to presence of renal stone for over 20 years. These three health problems and series of complications caused the 67 year old Blaga Velova to develop a serious health condition, due to which the the necessary surgery of kidney removal was not possible. After one month of continuous care by the multidisciplinary team of specialists in Cardiology, Anesthesia, Pulmonology, Urology and Nephrology, all complications were put under control and the operation of the patient was successfully performed.
Blaga Velova was hospitalized at the Department of Internal Medicine and Cardiology at Acibadem Sistina Hospital due to high fever which persisted despite the use of antibiotics, as well as pain and swelling in the legs, fatigue, shortness of breath and general weakness. After the performed diagnostic examinations, the patient was diagnosed with urinary tract infection, stones in the right kidney, deep vein thrombosis in the legs, pulmonary embolism, blood loss... The multidisciplinary team of doctors already knew that this was a serious condition that needed to be urgently solved.
“By administering high-dose of broad-spectrum antibiotics, anticoagulants and other symptomatic therapy we managed to put Blaga’s health condition under control. However, after the constant fever and other complications caused by the kidney inflammation, we decided that we must remove the kidney in order to save the patient. The main problem to be solved was removing the kidney, because given all occurred complications; the chances of Blaga surviving the intervention were very slim. On the consultative meeting it was decided that, despite the cardiovascular and pulmonary risk, the operation will be performed by Prof. Dr. Lekovski” said Dr. Meshkovska.
“The only solution to the patient’s health crisis was removing the dysfunctional right kidney that had a renal stone in size of 4.5 cm for over 20 years. Despite the associated diseases, the surgery went well and the kidney was removed. After the surgery all other parameters were monitored, which suggested that the patient’s condition was slowly but surely coming to normal day by day.”
At the surgical ward, Blaga was taken care by a team of physiotherapists whose task was to help her get back on her feet. The specialists’ care resulted in success on many aspects. The 67 year old Blaga Velova from Bitola left the hospital in good health condition and expressed gratitude to the entire team that took care of her and saved her life.
“This was a very tough battle, but eventually we came out as winners. Many thanks to the whole team, to Professor Lekovski, Dr. Daniel Jakimoski, Dr. Snezana Meshkovska Bongard, the anesthesiologists and nurses who took care of me. Together, they managed to save my life and give me a second one. I am so grateful that I want the whole world to know how professional this hospital is, so that other know where to find their cure” said Blaga, smiling.
Blaga Velova left Acibadem Sistina Hospital with positive energy and a lot of plans for her future. Despite the regular follow ups, Blaga will not need any additional therapy.
