Acibadem Sistina is ready to be the future of transplantation in Macedonia

11.06.2018

“Tissue and Organ Transplantation – Challenges and Dilemmas” was the title of the International Symposium, the first of its kind held in the Republic of Macedonia. The organizer and host of the event was “Acibadem Sistina” Hospital, and besides the host country it was attended by lecturers and guests from five countries in the region.

“Sharing experiences and education are some of the key elements. We open herewith the possibilities for introducing new techniques and technologies that, along with the knowledge and expertise, using the Acıbadem system, we will bring to our country. We are bringing solutions for transplantations that could not be applied in our country until now. On the other hand, it is of primary importance to constantly raise the level of cooperation and exchange of experiences with the Ministry of Health and the public healthcare institutions. Among other things, since the transplantation is great opportunity as well for opening the prospects for a Public Private Partnership in the healthcare system of the Republic of Macedonia”, said Dr. Jana Marin, Hospital Director and member of the Board of Directors of “Acibadem Sistina”.

Eminent experts in the area of tissue and organ transplantation from “Acibadem” Healthcare Group, Turkey as well as national experts from “Mother Teresa” University Clinical Center, Skopje attended the Symposium with their expert lectures.

“According to statistics, only 30 percent of the patients in need of transplantation have close-related donors (siblings), while 70 percent do not have close-related donors. Therefore, the choices for these patients are – to have an unrelated donor, from national or international donor bank, or to rely on high technology. A patient has at least 2.5 unrelated transplant donors on average, which is far more than 0.3 with closely related transplant donors. Transplantations that we perform at “Acibadem” Group have high technology at their disposal. We want to transfer this technology and our knowledge here in Macedonia, at “Acibadem Sistina”, says Prof. Dr. Siret Ratip from “Acıbadem Altunizade” Hospital, Turkey.

His colleague, Prof. Dr. Ercument Ovali, from “Acibadem Labeng” and professor of Hematology at Acibadem University in Turkey, concludes that the modern age comes up with options for molecular and cell therapy, while the technology is rapidly developing. “Macedonian colleagues are aware of this and we will try together to make the developments. Yes, we will offer technology and knowledge, but we will also offer our immediate help, assistance in the future to establish, develop and constantly upgrade the leading technologies of transplantation in Macedonia”, says Prof. Ovali.

National experts in this area held their lectures, presenting some of the Macedonian experiences.

“This is the first joint symposium of teams dealing with organ and tissue transplantation held in the Republic of Macedonia. Participation of colleagues from other countries provided an opportunity to present our experiences at the same time, to initiate more intensive cooperation and to include our patients in the current studies, primarily in the area of genetic engineering and regenerative, cell therapy. Macedonia was leader in the region in terms of cadaveric transplantation a few decades ago. Unfortunately, today we are still trying to return to the old paths and at the same time to provide multiorgan transplantation and to become members of the Eurotransplant”, says Prof. Dr. Borche Georgievski from the University Clinic for Hematology.

The lectures at the Symposium accredited by the Doctor’s Chamber of Macedonia were followed by doctors from Macedonia, as well as from Turkey, Serbia, Bulgaria, Albania and Kosovo.
